Behrang Qasemizadeh - Research Assistant (associate member)

Behrang QasemiZdeh, Natural Language Processing (NLP), PhD Candidate

I am currently a research assistant at the Knowledge Discovery Unit of DERI. As a research assistant, I work on Information Visualization for Exploratory Document Collection Analysis.

I am also pursuing a part time PhD in computer science under supervision of Dr Siegfried Handschuh. Formerly, Dr. Paul Buitelaar supervised my PhD.

My research interests are "language and logic", and "media and meaning" from the practical computational perspective.
The title of my PhD research is Technology Structure Mining and it consists of two major tasks: automatic term recognition and classification for the extraction of technology terms, and in-domain relation discovery in order to capture relationships between technology terms. I address these tasks by using a combination of vector space models, and support vector machines..

Before starting my PhD, I was research assistant at Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) where I had been a member of Speech, Image and Vision Systems Cluster (SIVC) for the ongoing "Integrated Sensor Information System" (ISIS) Project. Under supervision Ian O'Neill, and Philip Hanna, I had been in charge of developing a Natural Language Dialogue System for enquiring from surveillance video data as continue to Queen’s Communicator System. You can watch a demo of the Queen’s Communicator System here.

I have obtained my master’s degree in artificial intelligence from Iran University of Science and Technology for my work on video content modelling. In my master’s research thesis, I had been focused on “Temporal Ontology” vs “Time Ontology”, and using the temporal ontology for the video content modelling. Dr Kangavari supervised my master’s research. You can download my master’s research thesis from here (in Persian).

I have been also working on computational analysis of Persian language both as a member of a volunteer based team for developing Basic Language Resources Kit for Persian Language, and also as a member of localization team in CloniZER project. If you are interested in Persian Morphosyntactic Specification I suggest having a look at the Persian Morphosyntactic Specification on MULTEXT-East Ver 4. My last work on Persian language was a Text-to-Speech system for blind users.

Beside java and its related technologies, currently I enjoy/recommend following software/systems:

I have been named after an Iranian writer, Samad Behrangi, who wrote wonderful stories for children, and devoted his life to educate children’s of remote parts of Iran. "The little black fish" is one of his stories. I wish to be remembered as a Natural language processor!
